On Friday February 9, 2024, Desoto County Sheriff James F. Potter joined fellow Kiwanis Club of Arcadia members Barbara Foster-Jackson, and Mike and Irene Pooser in presenting The Little Prince, to 85 third-graders at Nocatee Elementary School. The novella was written and illustrated by French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,
The short story’s narrative accompanies a young prince on his adventures visiting different planets and experiencing circumstances relating to companionship, love, misfortune, and isolation.
Sheriff Potter encourages students to develop a daily reading habit at home, and the importance of students' reading, writing and communication skills in class. Kiwanis Club's mission intends to empower communities "...to improve the world by making lasting differences in the lives of children." According to their website, "Kiwanis strives to be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive."
