DHS Academic Team Qualifies for Nationals & Receives Foundation Grant!

The DeSoto County Education Foundation recently awarded $2,500 to the Desoto High School Academic Team! This charitable grant has lifted the team over the halfway mark in its fundraising efforts to attend the 2024 High School National Championships Tournament! The annual scholastic event is hosted by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments, the nation's largest academic team organization, and will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Friday, May 24-Saturday, 26th.

To qualify for this year's tournament, the team had to place in the top 15% of any regional NAQT tournament. After two near misses, one in Jacksonville and one at the John Schudel /Larry Bailey Challenge (hosted at DHS Saturday, Dec. 9th), the team eventually qualified at a tournament in Bradenton on Saturday, Jan. 6th, placing 3rd against 16 teams.

Competitors anticipated to be representing DeSoto at this tournament include: Roy Ortiz, Maritza Tovar, Eliazar Montoya-Vazquez, Wyatt Werner, Kara Blosser and a sixth student TBD.
