Background:

Volunteer USA Foundation is proud to support the twelve Florida Family Literacy Academies that serve Florida.   This family literacy effort was begun in 2000 under then-governor Jeb bush and with funding from the private entities, including major funding from the Barbara Bush Foundation.  Since      inception the Florida Family Literacy Initiative has funded over 145 family literacy programs in Florida, provides literacy training for parents, and annually distributes close to 200,000 "I am a Reader kits" to families of new born children.

The Florida Family Literacy Initiative encourages families to learn together, with education that helps parents improve their competitiveness in the workplace and helps children start school ready to learn.  by learning together, families keep each other motivated to perform.

GOVERNANCE:

The Florida Family Literacy Initiative program is managed by Volunteer USA Foundation whose honorary chair is Jeb bush.  Our board of director is chaired by Mr. Barney Bishop, and our president is Ms. Liza McFadden.  The Family Literacy Advisory Boards meets monthly to review issues and is chaired by Mr. Scott Ellington.  Volunteer USA Foundation was formed in August 2007 to support literacy, mentoring and other community issues.

Learning Together Mission Statement and Goals:

WE BELIEVE the family that learns together, excels together - beginning with the simple, joyful act of reading together.

Our goals are to:

  • Help adults become workforce ready through classes that encompass reading, math, parenting skills, and GED instruction,

  • while helping children start school ready to excel,

  • and, perpetuating lifelong learning as a family value to be passed on through the generations.

This unique program allows for the instruction of parents in basic literacy and language skills.  Parents also spend time learning Parenting skills that are so necessary to enhance the development of their child. There is a preschool classroom on site for the children who attend the program and qualified staff that work them in their learning development.  Learning time with parents and children together is shared every day and the importance of parental interaction is stressed.
