DRESS CODE

Proper school dress promotes performance and cooperative conduct as well as a feeling of personal pride.  All students are expected to dress and groom themselves neatly in clothes that are suitable for school activities and according to the Code of Conduct for DeSoto County High School.

The following dress code criteria prohibits symbols, words, pictures, etc. promoting drugs, satanic symbols, alcohol, suicide, killings, hate, etc.  In addition, gang symbols, messages or names marked or written on book covers, folders, or personal belongings will not be permitted.

Acceptable Dress

·       Shorts/skirts and dresses must be loose fitting and fingertip length (meaning they should extend to the tips of the fingers when arms are held at held straight at the sides).  Therefore, if fingertips touch the skin, the item is too short.  The slits on the garment’s front, back or side should not be higher than the fingertips as well.

·       Shirts/blouses must remain appropriately fastened.  All vests must have a shirt underneath.

·       Pants MUST be zipped, fitted, worn at natural waistline, and be no longer in length than the heels of the shoes.

·       Coats may be worn in school, but must be unzipped.  Pullover coats will be treated as clothing and must meet the requirement of shirts.

·       Cheerleaders may wear their uniforms on the day of a pep rally only.

·       Sleeveless jerseys may be worn over other sleeved shirts.

·       Cut off shirts of any type, especially with the sleeves cut off, or tops that show the midriff. (The midriff should not show with arms extended straight up) Hemmed sleeveless shirts are acceptable if only the arm is exposed.  There should be no exposure of undergarments or bare underarm.

·       Tank tops or shirts that look like undershirts or are undershirts.

·       Mesh shirts or tops worn without an undershirt underneath.

·       Clothing with obscene type words or pictures (sexual innuendoes, vulgarity, slurs, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, gamg symbols etc.) or any clothing offensive to good taste.

·       Skin tight and/or Spandex type apparel of any type or fashion (biker shorts, tops, exercise garments, etc.)

·       Shorts or skirts that do not extend to the tips of the fingers when placed normally at the side of the student.

·       Backless or off-shoulder dresses or blouses. Straps on dresses or tank top style dresses MUST be at least “two-inches” wide or covered by a top at all times.  If the straps become exposed, then the student is in violation of the dress code.

·       Sunglasses may not be worn or be visible inside the building.

·       Oversized chains of any size (example: dog chain style necklace, on wallets, etc.).

·       Footwear that is flip-flop, thong style, or bedroom type slippers.  This includes, rubber, plastic, or foam beach wear shoes and “sliders”.

·       Clothing which is torn and/or has holes is not permitted.

·       Gang paraphernalia, jewelry, tattoos, clothing, or other insignias, (including writings), which provoke and/or promote violence or disruptions may not be worn.

·       No sweat pant or gym type athletic shorts are permissible.

·       On athletic event days, team members must adhere to the dress code.

School administration reserves the right to judge any form of dress that may be inappropriate, disruptive, or unsafe for the school environment.

ALL Dress Code Violators will be referred to the Dean of Students. The student must change clothes or will be placed in the In School Placement (ISP) room until a change of clothes can be provided.  (Students not appropriately dressed will not be permitted to attend classes).  Absence from class will be unexcused.  Repeated violations will be considered as willful disobedience and will be subject to disciplinary actions as described in the student Code of Conduct.
