DeSoto County High School SAC-School Advisory Council October 10, 2005
Attendance: Karen Allen, Bro. Chuck Poe, Daniel Dubbert, Lucille J. LaCava, Bill Stanko, Linda Hall, Tim Backer, Judy Kirkpatrick, Kay Edelmann, Debi Barnwell, Ruben Ruiz, Linda Shayman.
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Tim Backer, Chairperson.
I. Minutes: Stand approved.
II. Treasurer's Report: Stand approved.
III. Old Business: A. Sidewalks: Mr. Dubbert stated he would check on the status of the upcoming project.
B. School Repairs: Mr. Dubbert stated that the white posts in the back parking lot are being repaired and painted. Others items in need of repair are being looked at. Mr. Backer asked if the carpet was being replaced. Mr. Dubbert stated that he was looking into a new type of equipment that would clean the carpets and remove the stains.
C. Additional lockers: Expected to be delivered and installed sometime this month.
IV. Reports: A. Renaissance: Ms. Heuer was not present at this meeting. She provided a written report that was read to the attending members by Lucille. Copy of report is attached. Request for Bulldog bone/Caught Reading goodie bags was tabled, due to the need for additional information.
B. Seniors: Class president, Ruben Ruiz, reported that the seniors were busy working on their float, preparing for the Homecoming Dance with the Junior Class and starting to plan for graduation and grad nite.
C. Juniors: Preparing for the Homecoming Dance and working on their float.
D. Sophomores: Working on their float.
E. Freshmen: Working on their float.
F. Principal: Mr. Dubbert went through a long list of events that were in preparation for the upcoming weeks: Homecoming Club Initiations Spirit Week Motivational Speaker, Steve Russo, coming to the High School on Oct. 27th. 10-29-05 event planned for Oct. 29th to take place at the High School. Activities for children from 7-9 p.m. (band, power team, candy, illusionist $1,000.00 giveaway) Open House scheduled for Oct. 20th from 5-7 p.m.
Mr. Dubbert stated that he was pleased that FCAT Explorer was being used by so many students. Mr. Dubbert explained the “walk throughs” that were being done by administration: 158 had been done to date. The purpose of the “walk throughs” is to look at what is happening in the classrooms. The results are used to help with future planning.
Mrs. Shayman reported that in the summer of 2004 Comprehensive School Reform money ($200,000.00) was spent on the Read 180 program. She distributed a copy of the Comprehensive School Reform Survey to each SAC member present. We completed the survey as a group. (completed copy attached)
Mrs. Shayman stated that presently the district was applying for a Federal Grant, “Striving ReadersGrant”. If this grant was received the District could be awarded $3 million dollars.
V. New business:
VI. Discussion: Mrs. Allen informed the members West Elementary Boosters were sponsoring Bar-B-Q dinners that would be available for purchase on Oct. 14th. The cost was $6.00 per dinner. Mr. Shayman was doing the cooking. Emails and sign-up sheets were distributed to all schools.
Mr. Dubbert stated that Academic Letter Awards would be on Nov. 14th.
VII. Adjournment: Meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
Our next meeting will be Nov. 14th, 2005 at 5:30 P.M.
