Summer 21st Century Institute

During the School District of DeSoto Summer 21st Century Institute students from each elementary school have been broken into several groups with reading in the morning and math in the afternoons.  During math enrichment two high school volunteers came to assist in the Math Olympics.  The two young ladies (Lindsey Hawkins, and Sarah Roberts) set up tape measures provided by the maintenance department.  When the small groups would come to the class they would assist the students with a discs (paper plate) throw, javelin (straw) throw, and shot put (cotton ball) throw.

The first and second graders had a great time in each event attempting to figure out how to make these items go the farthest. Once the students attempted these events they had to tell the volunteers how far they threw the items in feet and inches to show their math skills.  The students were so competitive that they never acknowledged the simple fact that they were helping us in the education of measurements.  The students were well rewarded with simple bracelets and treats at the end of the class.

The fun was for the staff staying up with these little ones in the events.  It is a joy to try and work in a game with the knowledge building skills for the students and extracurricular activities that are taking place this summer.

The volunteers had a hot and tedious job helping all the children, but showed great efforts and have offered to return to assist in more activities until summer session is over.
