Instill
a Positive Outlook in Your Child
Adrian H. Cline,
Superintendent
You have probably heard it before: People who have a positive outlook live
almost seven years longer than people who do not. Seven years for making a simple change in
your life. Most will agree that this is
an amazing fact.
Children respond well to positive attitudes
too. Mothers relate to their children in
a way that forms character and teaches values.
Children who receive positive praise, encouragement, and personal
attention from their fathers are more likely to grow up to have a positive
attitude.
Here are some ways you can show positive
encouragement to your children and, in turn, help them develop a positive
outlook on life:
§ Get into the right frame
of mind. Give a lot of thought to how
and where you can put your positive attitude to the best use. You will be surprised how easily your
children will adjust to the new you.
§
Bond with
your children by telling them happy stories about your past. Tell them about a role model in your life.
§ Tell your children you
are proud of them.
§
Plan
specific ways to encourage and praise your children this week.
§ Counter poor or
disruptive behavior from your children with positive reinforcement. Share with them similar situations you
encountered when you were young, and explain what you should have done to
correct the problem. Remember, it is
okay to admit that you made mistakes.
§ Sit down and talk with
your children every day. Even if you can
spare only 10 or 15 minutes, make the most of this time. Keep the conversation positive and
encouraging.
§ Try to avoid the word
no. Find positive ways to get your point
across.
The more positive you can make your
children’s surroundings, the more apt they will be to follow your good
example. The secret is to be
genuine. Do not say one thing and do
another. Your children are watching your
every move.
